PetroChina Dalian LNG Tank Top Lift Operation Completed

On September 27, the lifting of the LNG storage tanks of the Dalian LNG Project of PetroChina was successfully completed. This indicates that the first large-scale LNG project storage tank construction, “independent design, independent procurement, independent construction, and self-management”, has successfully reached the first key control point as planned, presenting a gift for the 60th anniversary of the new China. The Dalian LNG project will lay a solid foundation for completion and production in 2011.
The Dalian LNG Project is the first LNG project that was formally started and constructed by PetroChina. In accordance with the requirements of the group leaders, the Dalian LNG project was built to become a “strategic project, high-quality project, green project, and demonstration project”. The advanced project management model of “employer + PMC + EPC” was adopted. The project is built by PetroChina Dalian Liquefied Natural Gas Co., Ltd., and Ryukyu Engineering Co., Ltd. is the general contractor, which realizes independent design, autonomous procurement, independent construction and self-management. Since the official start of construction on April 18, 2008, all builders have been strictly managing, standardizing operations, meticulously organizing, and meticulously constructing, earnestly implementing each procedure, and proceeding in an orderly manner as planned. It takes only six months from pouring the pot to the top of the rise to create a new record in the history of LNG construction in China. The successful completion of this tank lift is a major breakthrough made by China's self-constructed LNG project, which indicates that China's large-scale LNG storage tank lifting technology has reached the international advanced level, and has accumulated successful experience for China's independent construction of LNG projects.
The Dalian LNG storage tank has a diameter of 84 meters and a height of 51 meters. Each tank can effectively store 160,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas at an ultra-low temperature of minus 162 degrees Celsius. Lifting the top of the tank using micro-pressure air buoyancy technology, using a high-power blower to send compressed air into the tank, lifting the pre-fabricated 695-ton arched steel tank top to rise to 36.5 meters along the inner wall of the concrete outer tank. In China, the previous LNG tank top-lift operations were led by foreign companies responsible for the preparation of the top-lift plan and implementation. The Dalian LNG project LNG storage tank is the first project in China to independently formulate a roof-lifting plan and organize implementation. In order to ensure the success of one-time lift, the owner carefully organized relevant experts and participating units to conduct multiple arguments and assessments on the top plan, risk identification, and emergency plan prepared by the general contractor, so as to fully prepare for the first success.
According to foreign experts, the lifting of LNG storage tanks is a key and difficult point in the construction of LNG projects.
