Ireland to build a hybrid lead-acid battery and flywheel power storage system

Hitachi Chemical announced on March 22 that it has supplied 576kWh of lead-acid batteries to a "hybrid power storage system" for renewable energy such as photovoltaics and wind power in Offaly, Ireland. A hybrid system will be constructed in combination with a U.S. company made flywheel.

SchwungradEnergie, a power system-related business in Ireland, developed the System Stabilization System with Limerick University. Hitachi Chemical became a supplier of lead-acid batteries "LL1500-WS" featuring the "hybrid" type of two power storage devices.

The setting of the battery has been completed, and the demonstration test of the connection between the system for stabilizing the system composed of equipment such as a hybrid power storage system and the power grid started on March 14. The empirical test was carried out by Schwungrad Energie, Ireland.

Ireland proposed the goal of increasing the share of renewable energy in power supplies to 40% by 2020.

In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to provide a power storage system capable of repeatedly charging and discharging, as one of the effective measures for suppressing a change in output when importing a large amount of power from a renewable energy source and realizing a stable power supply.

Renewable energy power generation due to wind and sunshine conditions, there are short-cycle and long-term output changes, will affect the stability of the power supply. Short-cycle output changes in a few minutes as a dramatic change, resulting in system frequency and voltage instability phenomenon. Long-term output changes refers to the output changes in units of tens of minutes. These output changes need to be stabilized.

The hybrid power storage system is a combination of 576kWh lead acid batteries manufactured by Hitachi Chemical Co., Ltd. and flywheels manufactured by BeaconPower of the United States. Flywheels are systems that store and release energy by rotating at high speeds.

The lead-acid batteries supplied by Hitachi Chemical make up to 1.5 times more discharge performance than the company's original product. Taking a system with an output of 1MW and an hour of discharge as an example, the installation space is reduced by about 16% and the weight is reduced by about 15% compared with the conventional one. Look forward to life expectancy of 17 years, suitable for envisaged long-term use of renewable energy sources.
