Allison Transmission accelerates cleanliness of Berlin's cityscape

From the Ku'damm to the Alexanderplatz, vehicles equipped with Allison fully automatic gearboxes can be used for garbage disposal, street sweeping and winter road maintenance. More than 620 Allison automatic gearboxes have become garbage-scrubbing vehicles to ensure that Berlin's streets are clean and tidy.

Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) is Germany's largest urban waste management company. Its service area covers 892 square kilometers (greater than the sum of the three cities of Munich, Frankfurt, and Stuttgart). The number of permanent residents in the service area is 3.45 million each year. The total number of tourists in the area is about 10 million. As a result, the daily tasks of BSR employees are very arduous.

About 1,100 vehicles are operated by BSR and are mainly responsible for garbage disposal, street sweeping and winter road maintenance. Of these, 626 vehicles (more than half of them) are equipped with Allison 1000 Series and 3000 Series automatic transmissions. Due to the many benefits of the torque converter technology and power shifting technology of Allison transmissions, fully automatic gearboxes have become “must fit” for BSR's many types of work.

“Fully automated gearboxes show a lot of advantages in Berlin's road traffic that starts and stops very often, which is a good helper for our drivers. In the long run, a single initial investment can save a lot of money. The replacement of conventional dry clutches in manual or AMT gearboxes is highly wear-resistant and therefore does not need to be replaced throughout the entire life cycle of the vehicle, explains Kai Groth, Product Manager at Berliner Stadtreinigung. "In the past decade, the use of a fully automatic gearbox has eliminated the replacement of about 1,500 clutches for us," Groth continued.

BSR spends approximately 180,000 hours each year on vehicle maintenance. Replacing clutches not only drastically reduces their operating costs, but also ensures that vehicle downtime is less and vehicle productivity and operational efficiency are higher.

“Our drivers are very satisfied with fully automatic transmissions. Many of them no longer want to drive cars with other types of transmissions,” adds Groth.

Capital champion invests in "green" team

In the past few years, BSR has invested heavily in the team. From 2006 to 2010, they replaced 870 vehicles with new ones, reducing exhaust, dust and noise emissions.

For BSR companies that are affiliated with the city of Berlin, it is very important for the team to drive low-carbon environmental protection and minimize the impact on urban residents. It is for this reason that BSR has begun using some hybrid garbage trucks to collect garbage and test all-electric vehicles and vehicles using fuel cells. At present, BSR operates 120 Mercedes-Benz Econic compressed natural gas garbage trucks, all of which are equipped with Allison 3000 series automatic transmissions. In order to achieve “zero carbon” driving, these vehicles may be fueled with biomethane produced by BSR’s own factory in Ruhleben, Berlin.

Through continuous use of garbage trucks powered by CNG engines, BSR hopes to substantially reduce carbon emissions. Compared with diesel vehicles, the use of compressed natural gas can reduce benzene pollution by approximately 95% and noise by half. The use of Allison transmissions also contributes to this goal. While making the engine speed more constant and the fuel performance more economical, Allison transmission can also achieve precise control of the shift point. When the car starts, the unique torque converter of Allison transmission will increase the torque output from the engine, which greatly improves the performance of CNG powered vehicles. The helical gear on the transmission also helps to reduce the CNG power. The overall noise level of the transmission.

The initial cooperation between BSR and the Berlin region in reducing carbon emissions has proven that investments in the modernization of the fleet are worthwhile. According to statistics of BSR, by the end of 2010, the reduction of carbon emissions was as high as 130,000 tons, exceeding the original agreement target of approximately 9,000 tons. “We are convinced that by improving the ecological performance of our fleet, we are expected to further reduce carbon emissions and achieve the goals set in the second agreement between the parties,” Groth said finally.
